WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT ANTLER, METEORITE & DINO BONE

Heavy Stone is known for working with incredible natural materials like antler, dinosaur bone, and meteorite. These materials look fantastic as ring inlays (all) and sleeves (antler only) in either crushed or solid treatments. It’s important to educate your client that natural materials are just that – natural. Each piece will vary slightly in color and texture, which, in our opinion, is actually what makes them so cool.

Heavy Stone offers elk antler sheds. Every year in late winter (January through March), elks lose their antlers. A drop in testosterone following their rut causes weakness in the connective tissue, and their antlers fall off. Dropped antlers are called “sheds.” The process doesn’t hurt the animal at all. In fact, regrowth, which begins in summer, can happen at a rate of 1/4″ to 1″ per day! In fact, new racks are usually bigger than the previous year. Age, genetics, the kinds of trees and sap the antlers are rubbed against, and even how soon a buck starts rubbing his antlers all influence color.

TO SEND IN YOUR OWN ANTLER, SUPPLY US A PIECE AT LEAST 1″-1 1/2″ IN DIAMETER.

Heavy Stone offers Gibeon Meteorite from Namibia. Among the rarest materials on Earth, meteorites are rocks that fall from space – likely from an extinct planet’s core or an asteroid. Gibeon Meteorite is over 90% iron, with the rest comprised of nickel and trace levels of cobalt. Sacred to the Nama people, Gibeon Meteorite was considered a gift from the gods. Dense, meteorite was long used in the making of tools, weapons, and as part of religious ceremonies. Like luxury watchmaker Rolex, Heavy Stone uses Gibeon Meteorite for its unique crystalline structure, known as the Widmanstätten pattern. With its needle-like, cross-hatch pattern, meteorite can be rough to the touch and porous. Surface irregularities (known as fusion crust) were caused by the meteorite heating up as it entered Earth’s atmosphere.

Yup. Just like on the movie Jurassic Park, Heavy Stone uses fossils believed to be from the Utahraptor, the largest of all raptor dinosaurs. Actually a feathered carnivore who ambushed its prey (rather than chase), our dino bone is from the Cedar Mountain Formation in Utah. Colors are a result of the natural minerals present in the soil during fossilization.
